Basics of High School Wrestling

High school wrestling is a sport that anyone can participate in if they choose to. You do not have to be tall or fast or strong to take up the sport. All you need is some effort, determination and heart to be a wrestler at your local High School. Wrestling is divided into 14 weight classes that were recently changed over the past year, the weight classes are as follows:

106 Ib
113 lb
120 lb
126 lb
132 lb
138 lb
145 lb
152 lb
160 lb
170 lb
182 lb
195 lb
225 lb
Heavyweight
Wrestlers will only wrestle other wrestlers in their weight class, this is a great equalizer that many other sports do not offer.

Wrestling takes place on a wrestling mat which is a padded surface that will have markings to indicate the center as well as the out of bounds points of the wrestling area.

The uniform consists of a Wrestling Singlet, Wrestling Shoes, Wrestling Headgear and many wrestlers choose to also wear Kneepads.

There are several rules in wrestling designed to protect the wrestlers as well as facilitate scoring, we are going to concentrate on the basics of scoring and in future posts we will discuss other rules in detail. The wrestling match starts in the "neutral" position with both wrestlers standing on the center of the mat. The object of the match is for the wrestler to take his opponent to the mat and hopefully turn him over for a pinfall which is simply holding the opponents shoulder blades flat on the mat for 2 seconds. Barring a pinfall there are other ways to score in a wrestling match. The takedown is worth 2 points, a takedown occurs when one wrestler brings the other wrestler to the mat and has his opponent under control. Another way to score is through near fall point, You score near fall points when you expose your opponent's back to the mat. His back has to be within a 45-degree angle from the mat for the referee to start counting. If you hold your opponent in this position for a three-second count, you are awarded two points; a five-second count rewards you with three points. Below is an example of a wrestler in a near fall predicament.

Other ways to score include escapes and reversals, an escape scores a wrestler one point when a wrestler who is on the bottom breaks free from the man on too and returns to his feet, which is 1 point. A reversal happens when the man on bottom switches position with the man on top, a reversal is worth 2 points.

Here is an image of a reversal in progress.

If there are no pinfalls scored in a match, typically they go to a decision, there are several types of decisions in high school wrestling. There is a decision which is when one wrestler outscores his opponent by 1-7 points, a major decision is when one wrestler outscores his opponent by 8-14 and a technical fall is when one wrestler outscores his opponent by 15 points or more. Please note, that once a wrestler outscores his opponent by 15 points or more, the match is stopped and a technical fall is declared.

The way a wrestler wins his match determines how many team points his team earns. A pinfall earns the team 6 points, a technical fall earns the team 5 points, a major decision earns the team 4 points and a decision earns the team 3 points. The results of each individual weight class are tallied and after the last match the team with the most team points is declared the winner.

Typically a wrestling match is 6 minutes long, divided into 3 two minute periods. The 1st period both wrestlers start in the neutral position. However the 2nd and 3rd period are decided by the wrestlers themselves. In the 2nd period one wrestler decides if they will both start neutral again, if he will start on top or if he chooses to start on bottom. The top and bottom positions in wrestling are called referees position.

Science Projects in Elementary School

Science Projects. Elementary School teachers almost always require students to do at least one science project before they finish the fifth grade. Elementary science projects are easy to find, but finding the right project for your child can be a challenge. Here are five hints to help you find the best project for your grade school child.

1. Find out what type of project your science teacher requires. There are many types of projects, and most elementary schools give a range of choices. Does your teacher want an experiment, a demonstration, a collection, a report, or a model? Knowing what kind of project you need will narrow down your choices considerably.

2. Make a list of things that interest your child. What subjects catch your child's eye on television or in books - space, animals, buildings, computers, explosions? Does your child need instant gratification? Consider a chemistry experiment with dramatic results, such as "Which Fruit has the Most Vitamin C?" Is your child concerned about the environment? Find out which toilet tissue is most biodegradable, or which type of insulation works best.

3. Set your budget for money - and time. If you don't have a lot of money to invest, and if your time is limited, there is no need to look at anything that requires special metals to be imported from the Far East. Decide on how much cash you're willing to spend, and create a generous time line for getting supplies. Keep in mind that you have to actually do the project after the supplies arrive.

4. Keep in mind that this is a science project for elementary school. Don't choose a project with complicated instructions. You want your child to do the project with your help - and not the other way around.

5. Provide four or five science project choices. Ever notice how it takes longer to decide on an ice cream flavor when there are 31 flavors? Give your elementary school child a limited list of science project choices, and you'll both be happier.

USA Medical School

Thursday, 29 December 2011

When it comes to medical schools in the USA they can now be classified under two categories. There are those schools which concentrate on the research side and those schools which focus all their attention on teaching their students about primary care matters. However when it comes to choosing which is the best medical school can be very difficult to achieve as some have a much higher reputation than others. For example you could say that Harvard is the best, but this is probably world wide this is the most well known.

But even if we were to put together a definitive list of what are the best and worst medical schools in the USA today. It does not mean that a student which to attend them can just apply for admission to get in to carry out their studies. Unfortunately if a medical school ranks highly then their requirement standards will be much higher. Often such schools will expect those applying to them to have a better Grade Point Average (GPA) as well as they will want their potential enrollees to sit a much more difficult MCAT (Medical School Admissions Test). But there are also other factors a student will need to take into when applying to such a good medical school as the school in question will look at where the student actually resides and how well their essay that they need to complete as part of their application was written.

Although certainly there are a number of advantages to be gained from attending and studying at one of the best medical schools in the USA. Certainly the degree you obtain from this type of school will help in obtaining a better position and often those students who rank highly at such an institute will find themselves being rewarded a much better residency position at some of the best medical establishments in the country today.

When it comes to looking for the best medical school in relation to research studies and training there are a number of different ones that a student can consider. These are namely Harvard University, Duke University, John Hopkins University along with the University of California San Francisco. Whilst Oregon Health & Science University and the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine are considered to be some of the best schools that provide students with excellent training relating to primary care matters. You can read more free advice on medical school acceptance at http://www.MedicalSchoolZone.com

Education Masters Degree Programs

Wednesday, 28 December 2011

The debate on the level of education and skills required for the teaching profession has been raging on for a long time. The fact is that the teaching profession is critical to economic growth as teachers determine the quality of students graduating from our schools ready for training in professional fields. While some believe that an education masters degree does not necessarily make a better teacher, others are of the view that teaching should be made a masters level profession.

The proponents of having an education masters degree argue that it will add to the teachers' mastery of their subject area as well as add to their teaching skills. Ideally this is the out come of undergoing this degree program. The graduate program gives teachers and other education stakeholders specialized skills in their subjects, advanced practical teaching skills and research methods.

Shift in market
More and more school districts and private institutions are preferentially hiring teachers with advanced teaching qualifications. Remuneration and promotion decisions are now more than ever also greatly influenced by teachers' educational qualifications. It is therefore clear that as things stand the trend is towards having teachers acquiring education masters degrees. However there have been calls for caution in teacher evaluation with calls for a look at actual output and performance.

The debate in the area of acquiring the masters degree has also been influenced in part by the argument on whether "how to teach" skills are superseded by knowledge in subject content. In essence do we need a teacher with advanced knowledge in a subject area or one with much more teaching skills background. The argument here is whether there is need to have teachers with more practical teaching skills or academic qualifications.

Good education masters program

A good masters program should create a better educator. Teachers should be able to transfer knowledge, offer guidance, leadership and be able to train and encourage independent thinking in learners. Since a maters program will advance on previously acquired knowledge as well as building on experience in the field, a teacher should be able to cement their skills in the profession.

Education masters programs are focused on specialized areas such as pedagogical methods, education economics, special needs education and curriculum development. The focus is on giving specialized skills to the teachers who already have teaching skills and subject knowledge in their area of interest. Most universities offer their education masters degrees with an option for online study. These online study programs are ideal for teachers who are already working.

Although there is some level of controversy on the merits and demerits of education masters degree programs to the education system, they remain a good path for career advancement for educators. The challenge for working teachers is the balance of their teaching work, grading of exams and assignments, planning for lessons and studying for their education masters course work. Teaching is a noble yet very demanding career that demands much dedication from the teacher. Pursuing an education masters degree while working as a teacher calls for even greater sacrifice.

Puzzle Game in Education Systems

A puzzle game is more of a brain game that can be used to develop critical thinking capabilities in a child. Although the game is enjoyed by both adults and children, today the game is often used in institutions of learning. The main reason why this kind of game has been incorporated into the education systems is because it provides a perfect balance between learning and having fun while learning. With this kind of game there is more use of mathematical elements like subtraction, addition, division and multiplications. To the child making use of the game, this will require some level of logic thinking to solve the puzzle. In this way, the child develops logical skills which come in handy in normal life situations.

A puzzle game is often associated with problem solving features. This is another reason why it is being used in the education systems. In life and in the classroom, a child will be required to solve certain small and big issues. With the help of the knowledge and abilities offered by the puzzle games it becomes easier for the child to solve these problems. The fact that a puzzle has to be solved in a prepared sequence, whether basic or complex sequence, means the child learns all the ways of solving problems.

There are very many types of these games and each has its own level of critical thinking. It is possible to pick more than one puzzle game to be played at once, or a child can be made to move from games that require basic logic to a complex one. This will ensure that the child graduates from simple thinking to critical thinking. This is another reason why this game is used in education systems. Furthermore, each type of puzzles will need a different sequence. Therefore, there is no monotony in the pattern used to solve the puzzle. Additionally, they get to learn how to solve mathematical problems in a fun and exciting way and they enjoy more.

Geometry is an important part of an educational system, especially for children who are still learning about basic shapes used in geometry. Every aspect of the game makes use of geometric shapes no matter the type of game. This means it can be used to help children learn about the various shapes. Therefore, they will have an easy time relating to the various shapes found in geometry.

Facts You Should Know About Special Education

Tuesday, 27 December 2011

Special education classes help a child learn who may have a learning disability or other problems that make it difficult to learn. Classrooms are set up to help the child learn and the class size is usually much smaller so the teacher can work with each child equally. Special education is important when a child cannot learn or has difficulty learning but still deserves the time and efforts it takes to learn.

Special education is a class taught to suit the needs of the individual. If a child has autism there may be an individual who is assigned to assist that child throughout the school day to meet all their physical needs. This allows the teacher the freedom to teach the child while someone works at another aspect of the disability. An assistant can also help the teacher in the classroom so she or he can get the lesson done more quickly.
Some schools offer a wide range in special education services. Some teachers will go to the child's home in order to teach them so they can still receive their education under special circumstances.
A person who wants to teach or assist in special education should know that it take compassion and the ability to deal with children in a frequently stressful environment. Every child in class will act and react differently so you never know what you are going to encounter and what is considered a normal day for your class. You may have a class that requires minimal special attention. Others may require a lot of attention and even though you may have an assistant your job is still going to be stressful.
Get more help outside of the classroom. if you have volunteers at your school then you need to be able to utilize them in order to help you. When things do not seem like they are working in your classroom you need to do something immediately and not waste time. A volunteer may be the one person who can make a difference for a child in your classroom.
Special education is important in our society and it will determine how well a child succeeds as an adult if they have a disability. If a child is never taught how to deal with their disability then they will always consider it a burden however if a child is taught from the beginning how to deal with it, they can guess when they are going to have an attack, whether they are feeling negative, whether they need to change their routine, and more. If a child finds that accepting his disability at an early age can help them then they can use this help to succeed instead of constantly focusing on what they cannot do or will not be able to do because of their limitation.
Teaching special education is vital to our society today. Not only will you teach your students things but your students will probably teach you a lot as well.

Find Fulfillment With A Career In Special Education

Unfortunately, children who have disabilities do exist, and they need teachers who have compassion, patience, and the knowledge to help them strive to reach their potential, no matter what it is! This is the field of special education, which has grown in its importance and demand, and makes a very fulfilling career choice.

You are such a person but you also have others depending upon you to put food on the table. No worries, this is not an impossible dream! You can enroll into an online degree program and do the work from home.

First of all, you will more than likely need a Master's degree to find employment, which is required by most states and is regulated by the National Teacher's Association. Upon your completion, there will be an exam for licensing, so don't forget to research the various institutions offering degrees to make sure of their accreditation. However, if you do not have an undergraduate degree in education, you can still enroll into the special education Master's degree.

This is an area of teaching that will allow you to think outside the box in order to find new ways to help your students reach their goals. Within your courses, you will have instruction in the psychology of education and the many legal issues facing the special education teacher in today's world. Also, you will have training in the many forms of handicaps that your students have to face up to and including mental disorders that cause learning problems. It is also important that you are able to identify any new obstacle that will need attention and care.

What has changed in the past several years is what a special needs teacher can do and what she or he is trained to do. Whether or not it is in the juvenile justice system or in a long-term care facility for children, teachers will always be needed to help with all levels of education, along with providing training for daily living skills that most of us take for granted. You could also open up your own practice for counseling students and their parents to help them face the many hurdles of growing up with disabilities.

The teaching of these children involves evaluating and implementing a course of teaching through comprising an IEP which is an individualized education program. These link all individuals who will be part of the education of that student. It also lets everyone know how the student is progressing and if there needs to be a change in the program due to a setback or a goal being reached.

Along with how to teach a child with learning problems is what has occurred or the reason for one's situation. Autism, mental health diseases, birth defects, and/or any harm that has occurred to the brain is taught and various forms of teaching that have the best results for each will be a vital part of your education. Also, through modern technology, there are now many devices that can be of benefit in helping teach a special needs child.

What is Online Education?

Sunday, 25 December 2011

Online education, also known as distance learning or e-learning, differs from traditional education because students are not required to visit an actual classroom and listen to an instructor face-to-face.

Online education is "a classroom without walls," says Dr. Stella Thompson, an online Assistant Professor of English at Prairie View A&M University. It's "engaging in assisted, self-directed learning."

Education Equals Higher Salaries
In the past, working adults weren't able to further their careers because of time restraints; including, but not limited to, working overtime, business travel, and caring for families. Online education takes away those time restraints by offering a completely virtual learning experience.

Working adults can now continue their education, earn higher degrees, and earn more money by attending courses that primarily take place over the Internet.

Benefits of Learning Online

Online education is truly about student convenience. Students can check in, work on assignments, and turn them in when their schedules permit, not when the college doors are open.

Online education means students no longer have to:

quit their jobs to attend college,
take time off from work to attend a specific course,
find a babysitter,
spend hours in rush hour traffic or drive 200 miles to the nearest University,
spend precious minutes looking for a parking space, and then
waste more of those minutes walking from class to class.
It also means students:

learn at their own pace,
gain more one-on-one access to their instructors, and
earn degrees in less time than it would take to juggle traditional courses.

How Online Education Works

After researching the best accredited institution, students are required to apply to one of the college's degree programs. Once accepted into an online program, students are asked to sign up for appropriate courses. After the registration process is complete and students are accepted into the program, the real work begins.

Students begin their course studies by logging onto the Internet. Once they're in their appropriate classroom, they'll learn by reading assignments, asking questions, and receiving instructor feedback. Some courses even offer forums and/or chat rooms where students can gather, with or without the instructor, to discuss assignments. Finally, students are graded on homework assignments, final projects, and test scores.

While most online courses are done using the above method, some courses are done during set times with more sophisticated programs, like the one Mrs. Strong-Millsap uses in her high school courses.

"In the program I teach, all students log in at the same time each day," says Joanna Strong-Millsap, a high school distance learning instructor. "We use microphones and headsets to communicate in real time. And the software program the school provides allows me to use a white board, PowerPoint presentations, and film, video, and audio clips. We can even pull up websites."

All Courses Are Not Created Equally

Different programs require different levels of computer and/or Internet knowledge. Therefore, it is vital students take the time to speak with potential instructors, previous college students, and even the computer tech department to get a better understanding of the teaching methods and technology used.

"Online instructors, like those teaching traditional courses, bring to their courses their own personal experiences, teaching objectives, and preferred methodologies. In addition, the institution's technology and technical support also influence learning experiences," says Dr. Thompson. "Some courses are text and content-focused, while other courses emphasize more technical skill and interaction with technology."

If students don't take the time to understand how the courses are designed, they could end up in a class that is too technologically advanced and suffer academically.

So while traditional colleges will never fade away, online educational institutions are growing in number and enrollments because they offer the working class a chance to advance in their careers, develop a higher level of personal confidence, and fulfill life-long dreams.

If you're ready to jump-start your education, an online course may be just what you need.

Education vs. training

The other day, I got a call from my good friend Marshall Fritz, president of the Separation of School and State Alliance. He had attended a meeting in New York of private entrepreneurs interested in doing something about education. Chris Whittle was there promoting the idea of government-subsidized private management of public schools. Ted Forstmann was there to talk about privately funded voucher programs. Marshall's impression was that these gentlemen did not have much of an understanding of the distinction between education and training, and he wanted my views on the subject.

Education, I told him, is concerned with the development of the mind, of the intellect, while training deals with learning specific skills. Education is a more personal activity, in that its main purpose is the enhancement of an individual's ability to use his mind for his own personal pleasure or gain. Training means developing skills that will be used more for social and economic reasons than for the self. Which means that education should come first, training later.

Animals, it should be noted, can be trained, but they can't be educated. Why is that? It is because human beings have the one capability that no other species has: the ability and capacity to use language. Language is more than merely a means of communication. Language links us with our Creator. God gave Adam the power of speech because he wanted to communicate with his creation. And he wanted Adam to be able to communicate back.

Even Noam Chomsky, noted socialist who also happens to be the world's leading linguist, writes:

[H]uman language appears to be a unique phenomenon, without significant analogue in the animal world. ... As far as we know, possession of human language is associated with a specific type of mental organization, not simply a higher degree of intelligence. There seems to be no substance to the view that human language is simply a more complex instance of something to be found elsewhere in the animal world. ... In fact, the processes by which the human mind achieved its present stage of complexity and its particular form of innate organization are a total mystery.

Of course, they are not a mystery if you believe the Bible. In fact, the Bible makes it quite clear what the purpose of language was as a God-given gift. First, it enabled Adam to communicate with God. Second, it permitted Adam to extend his dominion over the animal kingdom. We read in Genesis 2:19-20: "And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every fowl of the air, and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field."

In other words, God turned Adam into a scientist, an observer of the world around him, and also a lexicographer, an inventor of names. Thus, the second function of language was to permit Adam to know the world and control his environment. The third function of language was to permit Adam to know his mate, Eve, whom God had given him. This function gave man the ability to know others in a profound and intimate way. And, finally, the fourth function of language was to permit us to know ourselves. For without language we would not be able to engage in that inner dialogue that helps us know our own natures and chart the course of our own lives. John Calvin wrote in his "Institutes of the Christian Religion":

Our wisdom, in so far as it ought to be deemed true and solid wisdom, consists almost entirely of two parts: the knowledge of God and of ourselves. ... [N]o man can survey himself without forthwith turning his thoughts towards the God in whom he lives and moves; because it is perfectly obvious, that the endowments which we possess cannot possibly be of ourselves; nay, that our very being is nothing else than subsistence in God alone.

This intimate connection to God is demonstrated in the fact that infants start learning to speak during the very first year of life, which indicates the strength of this God-given ability. Language is the most powerful tool that any child can master. In fact, children are language-learning dynamos during the first six years of life, and this remarkable development provides the child with a launching pad for further mental and spiritual growth through the continued mastery of language through education.

It was the invention of alphabetic writing that gave man the ability to expand language with ease, and thereby enhance his ability to think and invent. The alphabet gave Adam's descendants the ability to do more than simply name what could be observed. Man could now name the invisible: atoms, neutrons, bacteria, viruses. He could write books, plays, biographies, histories, poetry, novels. (It should be noted that the Holy Scripture is written in alphabetic writing, not hieroglyphics.)

The ancients knew that education meant expanding the power of intellect, the ability to acquire knowledge. And so, traditionally, education meant learning to read well and fluently so that by reading and writing one could strengthen the powers of mind, increase one's knowledge of the world, and seek one's purpose in life. It was an affirmation of an individual's freedom to grow spiritually and control his own personal destiny.

But that traditional view of education has been largely abandoned by our so-called educators, who now believe that the purpose of schooling is training an individual to be a useful, politically correct social component in the economy. It was socialist John Dewey who first proposed the shift away from the emphasis on language learning to the hands-on basket-weaving curriculum of progressive education.

That philosophy has finally blossomed into Marc Tucker's Human Resources Development System, in which the government trains individuals to serve the State and the economy. In his famous letter to Hillary Clinton, Tucker wrote:

What is essential is that we create a seamless web of opportunities to develop one's skills that literally extends from cradle to grave and is the same system for everyone -- young and old, poor or rich, worker and full-time student. It needs to be a system driven by client needs, guided by clear standards that define the stages of the system for the people who progress through it, and regulated on the basis of outcomes that providers produce for their clients, not inputs into the system.

As you can see, there is no room in that system for the development of an independent intellect. In fact, to make sure that an independent intellect is not developed, the trainers make sure that each child's mind is made intellectually dysfunctional through whole language teaching in the primary grades. That prepares the child for training in the behaviorist, Skinnerian methodology, in which the reinforcement techniques of animal training are used on human children.

The takeover of American public schools by behavioral scientists and psychologists means the permanent destruction of traditional education. And because most parents, teachers, and politicians don't understand the distinction between education and training, there is virtually no chance that traditional education will ever be restored in our public schools.

Finally, the beauty of education is that, after learning to read, you can educate yourself by reading and investigating anything you want. But when it comes to training, you need trainers and schedules, tests and assessments, psychologists and remediators. To deprive children of the great personal benefits of education and to throw them at an early age into training is a crime, and its victims will be a blight on America for generations to come.

The Real Education System Problem

Friday, 23 December 2011

I'm convinced that they either don't get it and never will or they get it but refuse to acknowledge it.

The fact of the matter is we've been dealing with a dysfunctional education system for a long time and the so called solutions out number the days in a year for each year this problem has existed.

We've all read about the problems from funding schools, poverty, unions, quality teachers, old school buildings and even family income levels. This is not to say that there aren't any problems with any of these particular issues, but they all seem to miss the one most important and truthful issue that no one is talking about...Family.

The destruction of family values in our society has been going on for some time at a slow but steady pace. Thanks to liberal ideas and political correctness, the core of the family structure has suffered tremendously. This breakdown has contributed the most to the education system failure that we experience today.

I recently read an Op Ed piece about how family income levels determined the success of a student. I've seen students from low income family's rise up to be outstanding students and I've seen more than my fair share of students from middle to upper income families fail in school.

At the end of the school day when little Johnny or Sally goes home to a father that physically and mentally abuses them or their mother, do you think it matters if they go to an old school or a new school?

...When they have to go home to a stepparent that sexually abuses them, do you think they care about what the union rights of the school employees are and whether they should be able to retire after 20 years with full benefits?

...When they have to go home to a parent addicted to drugs or alcohol, do you think they care about the new government programs for keeping kids in school with a great new catchy slogan?

...When they have to go home to an empty house with no parents around who truly love and care for them and they must fend for their own meal, do you think it matters what the teacher was teaching that day?

Taking the family from the child is like taking the foundation from under the house, everything around them will just come crumbling down.

Dysfunctionalism does not discriminate based on family income. It does discriminate based on morality, values and the heart of a parent.

The solutions...

...More families standing for family values.

...More families who understand the value they bring as parents to the lives of their children.

...More families who make the schools their assistant in educating their children and not putting the burden solely on the teachers to babysit their children.

More strong families with family values will produce more strong children who are prepared to learn with an enthusiasm for living, loving and learning.

Law School Benefits

After learning from a career counselor what the prerequisites for a career in law are, you have completed your undergraduate degree and have taken the "LSAT" Law School Aptitude Test. With your "GPA" Grade Point Average and LSAT score numbers in hand, you may now go to an online law program predictor site and enter your numbers to see what the probability is of your success in being accepted to the Top Law Schools you are considering for obtaining your law degree. Backed by solid research, these predictor engines can provide very helpful information to all potential law students.

There are currently four admission prediction calculators available online. They are the Hour University of Maryland Law School Probability Calculator, a University of Maryland website; Law School Probability Calculator (which is a standalone site); Law School Admission Council's Search for Schools Based on "UGPA" University Grade Point Average and LSAT scores (more commonly and simply known as the "LSAC" Law School Admissions Council Calculator); and "LSP" Law School Predictor. All four use the numbers from your LSAT score and your undergraduate "GPA" Grade Point Average as the data for determining your chances of achieving admission to various law programs.

How A Law School Predictor Site Benefits Potential Law Students

The Hour University of Maryland Probability Calculator is an academic web-based resource for University of Maryland students and others. It utilizes only "LSN" Law School Nationwide data (gathered from all the law degree schools) that is self-reported by applicants then generates chance results. This site aggregates this data to calculate the user's percentages when compared to all LSN applicants with similar scores who achieved admission to different specific law programs. The results are listed in a "Record" column. Also listed in another column are percentages of those who were accepted with worse scores than the user. Conversely, another column lists percentages of those with higher scores who did not get accepted. When reading the results, if the "In with Worse" stats are high, you stand a better chance of admission. If the "Rejected with Better" stats are low, you also stand a greater chance of admission. You may also tweak your comparison percentage according to applicants who are wait listed and by factoring in comparison to "URM" Under Reported Minorities candidates.

Law School Predictor (LSP) provides comparisons with the top 100 full-time school programs, full-time unranked law programs and schools with part-time law programs. It relies on all law studies' admissions index formulas (which each develops from their own students' data) plus the 75% and 25% GPA and LSAT data of students who matriculated from each school to develop chance percentages. This program also factors in information on URM status and its most unique component is the application of a hidden penalty or boost to the user's chances based on being a splitter, although this part of the program is still being developed. A splitter may have a high LSAT score when compared to his or her GPA, or a lower LSAT with a high GPA. The newest available predictor program available, it is also loads the most slowly of the four.

The Law School Probability Calculator is basically like the Hour University of Maryland choice, but with less incorporated features. It also generates a 95% interval of confidence using logistic regression to provide data the user can see at the site. The Law School Admission Council Calculator takes all the gathered data from applicants of the previous admission cycle at each school to generate its chance predictions. This site displays the results as colored bar graphs, with green for the applicant's prediction and purple for the college's comparative data. Because the prediction range can be very broad at times, a number of the very top law programs choose not to participate in this site's program, so predictions for you with those schools are not available.

The LSAT is a much researched testing device that yields consistently useful results. That is why any law studies admission committee is going to give great consideration to your LSAT score. When considered concurrently with your GPA, this data offers predictive validity to your chances of admission when compared to admission data of various law schools' previous candidates. Making use of one of these online school predictor sites can give you a fairly accurate picture of your chances of admission to the law schools of your choice.

Classroom Education Workshops

Thursday, 15 December 2011

As our lives get busier and busier, the time we allow ourselves to spend learning and training seems to wither away. The option of distance education and online courses grows more and more attractive and can be an excellent option in some cases, but the benefits of face-to-face workshops cannot be ignored. Whether you're doing a bookkeeping course, a beekeeping course or learning how to knit, there are certain benefits you get in the classroom that you forgo in an online setting. Here are 4 advantages to face-to-face classroom-based workshops:

1. The Ability to Ask

Making mistakes and asking questions is how we learn. While an online course gives you email access to a tutor, it can't replace a real-time conversation where you're able to really nut out a problem or issue you may be having with the material. A face-to-face conversation with your teacher or a fellow classmate can clear up a misunderstanding in a matter of minutes, whereas in an online or distance-learning environment the misunderstanding could become compounded, affecting your achievement within the course.

2. Learn Through Doing

A classroom situation offers you the opportunity to practise and take part in whatever skill you're trying to learn, as well as get instant feedback on your progress. Theory is a big part of learning, but the actual practice is what hones your skills, and practising with a tutor present is a much quicker way to get it right.

3. Collaborative Learning

In the workplace, most of our work is collaborative. Collaboration and group-learning not only speeds up the process of achieving our goals, but the actual process of compromising and debating issues in a group environment is invaluable training for a real-life career situation. A classroom setting not only allows you to learn from other people's successes, it allows you to learn from their mistakes. They say that a mistake is the quickest way to learn something, and with several other people all making mistakes along with you, it goes without saying that the learning process would be hastened.

4. Consistency

A face-to-face classroom environment holds us accountable for our work. We're required to show up and engage with the material, rather than simply put in a sporadic effort at home and fudge our way through the course. specially for people who have issues with procrastination, classroom workshops prevent slacking off and ensure you must turn up consistently, which immediately puts you at an advantage in terms of your capacity to learn!

Whether you're in leadership training or learning Cantonese, face-to-face classroom workshops provide the kind of hands-on learning that often leads to quicker, better results and more confident and experienced graduates.

Higher Education

Wednesday, 14 December 2011

The Higher Education Program (HEP) is designed for students interested in careers in administration in a college or university or in policy and planning at a higher education association or agency. During an intellectually and personally invigorating academic year, students examine the policies, practices, and issues of contemporary American higher education and enhance their analytical and managerial skills.  Rather than preparing students for one particular job, the curriculum offers them the skills and knowledge essential for their professional advancement through many positions during their careers in higher education.

At Harvard, HEP students are taught by higher education faculty whose vast knowledge, experience and passion for their fields enrich their courses and inform their advising.  The HEP’s innovative “president-in-residence” program brings a former college president to Harvard each year to attend classes, meet with students, and discuss course assignments and career choices. Many students complement their coursework with custom-designed, paid internships that provide professional development in an ongoing or new field of interest.

Students also learn from their extraordinarily smart, talented, and enthusiastic peers.  Coming to Harvard from a broad array of previous positions, students have diverse academic, professional, and life experiences that enliven their conversations in and outside of the classroom.  Some have worked in higher education previously, in entry, mid-management or faculty positions; some are interested in making a career transition into higher education; and a select few come directly from undergraduate studies where they were highly accomplished students and student leaders. The master's degree in Higher Education is a one-year, full-time program. A very small number of part-time students are admitted and complete the degree in two years.

The cohort-based program creates exceptionally close ties that extend well beyond the students’ graduation.  After HGSE, HEP graduates assume roles of increasing leadership and influence in student affairs, academic affairs, enrollment management, institutional research, finance and planning, institutional advancement, and policy analysis.  They remain connected to each other and to the Higher Education Program as they work to improve and sustain the work of colleges and universities.
